Distribution Class

The three-day course is designed to assist the water distribution system operator in passing the California Water Distribution License exam.

The course provides an in-depth overview of water distribution system principles and regulations. Subject matter covered includes: water distribution system hydraulics, velocity calculations, unidirectional flushing programs, biofilm control methods; field disinfection of mains, storage tanks and wells, and AWWA disinfection standards; water container, velocity and horsepower mathematics; dosage of chlorine and chloramines, breakpoint chlorination; appropriate uses of specific valves and meters; annual maintenance of mains, hydrants, valves and meters; operator safety, toxic gasses, confined spaces and trench safety. Additional topics include preparing for and reacting to natural disasters that affect a drinking water distribution system, C factor calculations, and operational practices to maintain water quality.

The textbook is the Sacramento State University manual, “Water Distribution System Operation and Maintenance,” 5th Edition.

Treatment Class

The three-day course is designed to assist the water treatment plant operator in passing the California Water Treatment Plant Operator License exam.

The course provides an in-depth overview of water treatment principles and regulations. Subject matter includes: principles of disinfection, coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration; chemical dosage, water treatment processes; fluoridation; controls and monitoring; contaminates, organics, inorganics, and water borne microbes; conventional treatment, lime softening, reverse osmosis, ion exchange; and water treatment and hydraulics math.

The textbook is the Sacramento State University manual, “Water Treatment Plant Operation,” 5th Edition.
